The Benefits of Dance for Dyspraxics and Dyslexics Essay Example for Free
The Benefits of Dance for Dyspraxics and Dyslexics Essay As a result of my vocation in the educating of move, I have had some down to earth experience working with dyslexic and dyspraxic youngsters for various years at this point and have gotten progressively inspired by the issues they face. In having this examination to compose a perfect open door emerged to inquire about the subjects in more detail. In doing so I have found how tremendous it truly is and that it is so hard to compose even a clarification of the conditions. ââ¬Å"No two dyslexics are alikeâ⬠,[1] so how might one state accurately what it is? Indeed, even the various foundations who are master in their fields contrast. My point is to open up the subjects, inciting some enthusiasm for the peruser to become familiar with them and afterward to concentrate on how I feel move can be of help with the childââ¬â¢s life, but in totally different ways. To cover only one subject completely would be unthinkable, yet I trust, in skimming the surface, I can exhibit how significant these issues are. I don't guarantee mastery. The data that I have utilized originates from dependable sources (see Bibliography) and incorporates genuine beliefs. The basic actuality is that despite the fact that the two words sound comparable, they are totally different issues. There are numerous meanings of dyslexia. The International Dyslexia Association states that;ââ¬Å"dyslexia is a neurologically based, regularly familial, scatter which meddles with the obtaining and preparing of languageâ⬠.[2] British Dyslexics state just ââ¬Å"individualsâ⬠¦.struggle to learn thanks to composed or spoken languageâ⬠,[3] yet have a rundown of definitions from different sources which includeââ¬Å"dyslexia is the capacity to see multidimensionally, at the same time, or from any each spot in turn. The capacity to think in pictures and to enlist those photos as genuine. Hence, you blend in innovative intuition with the real world and change what is seen or heardâ⬠.[4] The level of dyslexia victims fluctuates from source to source, it might be up to 20% of the populace (Dyslexia U.K data on ââ¬ËIncidence ââ¬â¢[5]) in differing degrees. That is a huge sum! Multiple times a larger number of guys are influenced than females most likely on the grounds that it is generally innate being gone down through guys. As far as I can tell young men vigorously exceed the proportion of young men to young ladies. Ron Davis, a dyslexic who endured as a youngster composed the book ââ¬Å"The Gift of Dyslexiaâ⬠. It left me both progressively befuddled about the issue but all the more comprehension of it as well! For what reason do dyslexics who are generally ordinary to better than expected knowledge regularly experience issues at school despite the fact that ideally these days instructors are educated to be progressively mindful of learning incapacities? My comprehension of Davisââ¬â¢ book permits me to see that dyslexics need a totally extraordinary sh owing strategy in light of the fact that their perspectives are unique. Dyslexics think in pictures, non-dyslexics think verbally (utilizing words). These photos/musings occur at a pace of around 32 every second, rather than 2-5 contemplations per second for the verbal thinker.[6] Dyslexics don't know about the vast majority of their considerations as they happen too rapidly, however the subconscious piece of the mind takes them in and it is this capacity that gives them exceptionally tuned instinct and imagination. They become so engaged with their considerations that these become reality-they see, hear, smell and feel what is in their minds. This creates me some turmoil as I am a verbal scholar and it is hard to conceptualize another perspective. In what manner can any one instructor be relied upon to educate in two unique manners simultaneously? It is similar to having one portion of the class thinking in French and the other in English however all communicating in English (to utilize rather an outrageous relationship). The purpose for deduction in pictures originates from the overall sizes of the brainââ¬â¢s halves of the globe. The correct side is frequently bigger in dyslexics and this is the ââ¬Ëpictureââ¬â¢ side, the imaginative focus. The left side is the language side. This turns into an issue when the kid goes to class and doesn't comprehend the composed word. An alternate learning process is required as our present techniques depend vigorously on composed language and verbal idea. There turns into a major error between their scholarly capacity and their understanding execution. This absence of comprehension in one region is additionally the motivation behind why people are talented in another zone. Profoundly tuned instinct is a dyslexic ability, just like a more prominent interest the ââ¬Å"dynamic power behind creativityâ⬠.[7] Dyslexics can ââ¬Ëseeââ¬â¢ things from all edges and from outside themselves. They can put their ââ¬Å"mindââ¬â¢s eyeâ⬠[8] anyplace, seeing the entire picture as opposed to parts of the entirety. ââ¬Å"Dyslexia would not be so normal if its belongings were absolutely detrimentalâ⬠. [9] Many of the incredible masters were dyslexic-Einstein for instance once stated, ââ¬Å"if I canââ¬â¢t picture it, I canââ¬â¢t comprehend itâ⬠;[10] Da Vinci, Walt Disney and Winston Churchill all endured with this ââ¬Ëafflictionââ¬â¢. Living dyslexics incorporate Cher, Whoopi Goldberg, Guy Ritchie and Eddie Izzard ââ¬Å"the unusual associations he makes in his unscripted shows might be a dyslexic dividendâ⬠.10 An ongoing article in the Daily Telegraph includes a seriously dyslexic business person, Ben Way who at 20 is a multimillionaire! His granddad was dyslexic and his mom is which might be one explanation behind his outstanding aptitudes. At the point when he gets a thought he says ââ¬Å"it all meets up like a humming treats floss machine, turning in my mind, making associations from everywhere. In an hour I discover I can see the answer for a problemâ⬠.[11] He additionally says about individuals he has worked with of higher IQ than himself ââ¬Å"but they donââ¬â¢t see things from such a large number of anglesâ⬠. 11 It is most likely turning out to be evident that the negative side of dyslexia has an equivalent and inverse positive side that would not be so evolved if there were no dyslexia present. The manner in which they think drives them to be conceivably capable in numerous regions disconnected to their language aptitudes. Their ââ¬Å"special ability originates from the equivalent mental capacities that keep them from having the option to peruse, compose or spell wellâ⬠.[12] Instinct has just been referenced, this capacity to comprehend and picture the entirety. Innovativeness relates straightforwardly to move (and other visual subjects; craftsmanship, plan, innovation and so forth). Their manners of thinking which permit them to picture something, even themselves from another point in space is exceptionally attractive in aesthetic subjects. ââ¬Å"Dancers and competitors (two most loved callings of dyslexics) normally have their psyches eye situated over their headsâ⬠.[13] As infants and babies dyslexics are more inquisitive than other kids are, frequently strolling before creeping. This interest prompts innovativeness and this imagination is the blessing they have. In move, creative mind and innovativeness are indispensable. Dyslexics are generally acceptable musically and inward mood is another significant component we search for. In synopsis the capacities that dyslexics have that possibly would make move a decent medium are-1:Thinking in pictures; move is a visual work of art that requires the member to see shapes and duplicate shapes. It is moving craftsmanship. 2:Thinking and seeing multi-dimensionally. All the faculties are used, seeing the entire picture as opposed to sections. Perfect while arranging. 3:A distinctive creative mind. 4:Extraordinary inventive abilities. ââ¬Å"Tasks which require the capacity to imagine something in an innovative or distinctive manner are frequently straightforward for the person with these talentsâ⬠.[14] Accomplishment is essential for anyoneââ¬â¢s confidence yet particularly for a kid who may see themselves a disappointment in different parts of their lives. To my brain if youngsters are battling at school out of the blue, yet discover a specialty for themselves in the move class or some other action, at that point we are obliged to support it. This should construct their certainty and self-esteem and ideally help them in different parts of their lives thus forestall negative sentiments of disappointment and disappointment. It might likewise counterbalance other related issues that could emerge, for example, awful conduct and misery. Thomas Scheidler (prime supporter of The Greenwood School) found a ââ¬Å"big disparity between their [dyslexics] capacity to perform masterfully and their capacity to act in language areasâ⬠. [15] In sports that required great parity and co-appointment they exceeded expectations; dyslexics that are well co-ordinated ââ¬Å"tend to likewise be particularly acceptable in sports that require balance and a feeling of flowâ⬠. 14 It is so imperative to empower youngsters in disciplines where they exhibit some fitness, particularly kids who clearly endure in essential learning zones. Dyspraxia or ââ¬Å"developmental co-appointment disorderâ⬠is ââ¬Å"an debilitation or adolescence of the association of development and, in numerous people, there might be related issues of language, discernment and thoughtâ⬠. [16] Between 2-10% of the populace are influenced, 70% being young men. (Dyspraxic Foundation). I mean to focus on the issue of co-appointment and possibly address different challenges when they are significant or connection to the job of move/development. Nearly from birth youngsters with dyspraxia will give indications of development hindrance. They need engine fitness and have regularly been named ââ¬Ëclumsyââ¬â¢. It is thought, â⬠parts of the mind have neglected to develop properlyâ⬠. [17] Without diving into the thinking behind this to an extreme, it is critical that when taking a ââ¬Ëhistoryââ¬â¢ questions concerning pregnancy and diet are incorporated (p.19 Developmental Dyspraxia by Madeleine Portwood). Dyspraxia ââ¬Å"affects how a youngster oversees and co-ordinates their movementsâ⬠[18] in light of the fact that ââ¬Å"reinforced in

5 Graphic Novels to Watch For in June
5 Graphic Novels to Watch For in June The Life Changing Manga of Tidying Up: A Magical Storyâ"Marie Kondo (writer) and Yuko Uramoto (artist) I donât really feel like I need to read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Not because my home is a joy-sparking minimalist utopia (I blame my toddler, who is too young and innocent to imagine that sheâs a scapegoat for my own tendency towards untidiness), but rather because Marie Kondoâs curatorial philosophy is seemingly inescapable. And after its adaptation in Americanized manga form (read left to right), we can strike out âseemingly.â From preview pages, it appears that a young woman enlists KonMari to get her shit togetherâ¦in order to appeal to a fastidious hottie who shares her apartment building. Not great, but if you want to give it the benefit of the doubt in order to have something zeitgeisty to read while you avoid household chores⦠Descender Volume 4: Orbital Mechanicsâ"Jeff Lemire (writer) and Dustin Nguyen (artist) Hereâs the first of three collections on my June radar (this post is totally outing me as a trade-waiter). This series does adorable and horrific equally well as it follows the harrowing adventures of empathetic android child Tim-21, who finds himself (and his robot dog!) entangled in a galactic war between man and machine. Iâd be here for Lemireâs story alone, but my dudes: the art is gorg. Nguyen would sweep every event in the watercolor Olympics, which should definitely be a thing. The Wicked the Divine Volume 5: Imperial Phase Iâ"Kieron Gillen (writer) and Jamie McKelvie (artist) I needed a frame of reference for all the #WicDiv cosplay I was seeing at New York Comic Con this past fall, so I finally got myself caught up on this Image hit. Be still, my comparative mythology enthusiast heart! If you couldnât care less about that sort of thing though, you should still give this series a shot. Its exploration of life, death, creativity, and fan culture is vibrantly told and will stick with you. And with four volumes already available, itâs the perfect summer binge reading candidate. The Leaning Girl (Obscure Cities)â"Benoit Peeters and Francois Schuiten, translated by Stephen D. Smith If you are literate enough in one of the ten languages this has already been translated into, then you donât have to wait until June 20. But thatâs a date to circle on your calendar if youâd like to experience this philosophical sci-fi graphic novel in English. If teenager Mary, the titular leaning girl, seems familiar, you may have encountered her as an adult in The Theory of the Grain of Sand, already out in an English translation. But one of the things I love about the Obscure Cities world-building is that you can wander around at will without becoming hopelessly disoriented. Order schmorder. Bitch Planet Volume 2: President Bitchâ"Kelly Sue DeConnick (writer), Valentine De Landro (artist), and Taki Soma (artist) This series is required reading. It just is. Thatâs why Iâm not even mad that my lent-out Bitch Planet Volume 1 hasnât yet made it back to me. If youâre frustrated with the production schedule (or lack thereof), youâre not alone. Thereâs a definite loss of storytelling momentum when there are four-to-six months between issues. And then thereâs just plain forgetting what happened when last we saw our heroes. Thatâs where a collected volume can be a super handy thing. Check out Volume 2, and remember everything that makes this series worth waiting for. I wouldnât want a monthly installment if it meant sacrificing the #ownvoices consulting behind the scenes, or the excellent topical essays. Our writers will create an original "Mysterious Setting Of The Cask of Amontillado" essay for you Create order The setting is important because it has an emotional effect on the reader. Montresor took his revenge to far over a little insult. The plan for Montresorrs revenge went really far. He developed a very well thought plan and it was terrible idea for the little insult that he had received. He had set the plan up perfectly. He knew what would lure Fortunato in, Montresor used something Fortunato loved to get his revenge. Instead of talking with him, Montresor went his own way, the hard way by planning a murder without being caught. The way the scheme was planned had a lot of thought put into it but Montresor never put a different idea on how he could get over the issue. He assumed murder was the best option but it didnt solve anything it would have created more problems. In The Cask of Amontillado the setting was important because it made the story have an emotional effect meaning it put fear into the story and it made it seem fearful. The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre. The setting describes southern gothic literature. It is mysterious and violent events had happened. In the beginning of the short story Montresor approaches Fortunato, while Fortunato dressed like a jester which was odd but they were at a carnival. The way Montresor lured him to his house he was able to know no one was home to be suspicious. Montresor took kinda took advantage of Fortunato by knowing his love of wine. Knowing what he likes and cant say no to, was the easy way to get his revenge started and took the matter seriously. It doesnt make sense to why he killed him over the insult. The final moments of conversation between Montresor and Fortunato heighten the horror and suggest that Fortunato ultimately and ironically achieves some type of upper hand over Montresor. Montresor had given Fortunato to turn back before they reached the end because Fortunato had been coughing but he said Enough, the coughrs a mere nothing;it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough. therefore Fortunato had the chance to save his life he just chose not to take it. In conclusion Montresor took his revenge too far by murdering someone. He could have handled the situation differently by talking to him about of just forget about it. This tells the reader that you can only conclude that in Montresor Family, death is way of punishment for being insulted or threatened. He claims that he has borne a thousand injuries from Fortunato, but he does not go into detail about what these supposed injuries actually are.

The Role Of Female Serial Killers On The Mind Of A Serial...
Delving into the mind of a serial killer can be a dark and twisted place to go, but also very interesting and intriguing at the same time. While the majority of serial killers in history have been men, women have also had their place in this type of crime. Often our first question when we hear the news of a new serial killer, our first question is ââ¬Å"who is he?â⬠But as we will examine through the research for this paper, women can also be geared to not only kill but to do it over and over again. Although women historically are not as abundant as their male counterparts, there is quite a list of female serial killers. Two of those women are Aileen Wuornos, who has been deemed the first female serial killer, and Dorothea Puente. Dorotheaâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Although authorities were unable to prove the attempted drugging, Puente was convicted and sentenced to 5 years in jail on a theft charges. While setting out her jail time, Puente began a pen pal relationship with 77-year-old Everson Gillmouth. After serving three years of her sentence, Puente was released in September of 1985, where she then moved in with Gillmouth and opened a joint bank account. Unfortunately this would not end well for him. (Crime Museum, 2016). In November ââ¬â¢85 Puente paid her hired handy man to help her dispose of a large wooden box he had built at her request for storage, but actually contained the remains of Gillmouth. Two months later the box, with Gillmouthââ¬â¢s remains inside, was discovered by two fishermen. The remains would not be identified as Gillmouth for three years, but during this time Dorothea Puente was cashing his pension checks and forging letters to his family members. (Criminal Museum, 2016). Over the next three years Puente would take the lives of at least nine other victims. Her crimes remained undetected until Alvaro Montoya, a mentally disabled and schizophrenic tenant of Puenteââ¬â¢s missed a scheduled meeting with his social worker. The social worker reported Montoya as a missing person. Authorities went to Puenteââ¬â¢s boarding house where Montoya was living and discovered recently disturbed soil and they unearthed 7 bodies buried in the yard. Once the investigation into the murders began, Puente was not yet
The Colour Purple Theme Free Essays
The title of the book is a very important symbol. Celie goes through life having a hard time noticing the beautiful aspects and appreciating them. She had a difficult life and was abused as an adolescent. We will write a custom essay sample on The Colour Purple Theme or any similar topic only for you Order Now ââ¬Å"The color purple is continually equated with suffering and pain. Sofiaââ¬â¢s swollen, beaten face is described as the color of ââ¬Ëeggplantââ¬â¢. Purple is the color of Celieââ¬â¢s private parts: the site of her sexual violation. However, later Shug points out to her that life must be enjoyed. When they were in a field of purple flowers, Shug tells Celie to look at the flowers and embrace their beauty. You must look at all the good and acknowledge them because God placed them all on earthâ⬠. After learning this, Celie has a better respect for life and everything it has to offer. Themes, Motifs Symbols Themes Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. The Power of Narrative and Voice Walker emphasizes throughout the novel that the ability to express oneââ¬â¢s thoughts and feelings is crucial to developing a sense of self. Initially, Celie is completely unable to resist those who abuse her. Remembering Alphonsoââ¬â¢s warning that she ââ¬Å"better not never tell nobody but Godâ⬠about his abuse of her, Celie feels that the only way to persevere is to remain silent and invisible. Celie is essentially an object, an entirely passive party who has no power to assert herself through action or words. Her letters to God, in which she begins to pour out her story, become her only outlet. However, because she is so unaccustomed to articulating her experience, her narrative is initially muddled despite her best efforts at transparency. In Shug and Sofia, Celie finds sympathetic ears and learns lessons that enable her to find her voice. In renaming Celie a ââ¬Å"virgin,â⬠Shug shows Celie that she can create her own narrative, a new interpretation of herself and her history that counters the interpretations forced upon her. Gradually Celie begins to flesh out more of her story by telling it to Shug. However, it is not until Celie and Shug discover Nettieââ¬â¢s letters that Celie finally has enough knowledge of herself to form her own powerful narrative. Celieââ¬â¢s forceful assertion of this newfound power, her cursing of Mr. ______ for his years of abuse, is the novelââ¬â¢s climax. Celieââ¬â¢s story dumbfounds and eventually humbles Mr. _____, causing him to reassess and change his own life. Though Walker clearly wishes to emphasize the power of narrative and speech to assert selfhood and resist oppression, the novel acknowledges that such resistance can be risky. Sofiaââ¬â¢s forceful outburst in response to Miss Millieââ¬â¢s invitation to be her maid costs her twelve years of her life. Sofi a regains her freedom eventually, so she is not totally defeated, but she pays a high price for her words. The Power of Strong Female Relationships Throughout The Color Purple, Walker portrays female friendships as a means for women to summon the courage to tell stories. In turn, these stories allow women to resist oppression and dominance. Relationships among women form a refuge, providing reciprocal love in a world filled with male violence. Female ties take many forms: some are motherly or sisterly, some are in the form of mentor and pupil, some are sexual, and some are simply friendships. Sofia claims that her ability to fight comes from her strong relationships with her sisters. Nettieââ¬â¢s relationship with Celie anchors her through years of living in the unfamiliar culture of Africa. Samuel notes that the strong relationships among Olinka women are the only thing that makes polygamy bearable for them. Most important, Celieââ¬â¢s ties to Shug bring about Celieââ¬â¢s gradual redemption and her attainment of a sense of self. The Cyclical Nature of Racism and Sexism Almost none of the abusers in Walkerââ¬â¢s novel are stereotypical, one-dimensional monsters whom we can dismiss as purely evil. Those who perpetuate violence are themselves victims, often of sexism, racism, or paternalism. Harpo, for example, beats Sofia only after his father implies that Sofiaââ¬â¢s resistance makes Harpo less of a man. Mr. ______ is violent and mistreats his family much like his own tyrantlike father treated him. Celie advises Harpo to beat Sofia because she is jealous of Sofiaââ¬â¢s strength and assertiveness. The characters are largely aware of the cyclical nature of harmful behavior. For instance, Sofia tells Eleanor Jane that societal influence makes it almost inevitable that her baby boy will grow up to be a racist. Only by forcefully talking back to the men who abuse them and showing them a new way of doing things do the women of the novel break these cycles of sexism and violence, causing the men who abused them to stop and reexamine their ways. The Disruption of Traditional Gender Roles Many characters in the novel break the boundaries of traditional male or female gender roles. Sofiaââ¬â¢s strength and sass, Shugââ¬â¢s sexual assertiveness, and Harpoââ¬â¢s insecurity are major examples of such disparity between a characterââ¬â¢s gender and the traits he or she displays. This blurring of gender traits and roles sometimes involves sexual ambiguity, as we see in the sexual relationship that develops between Celie and Shug. Disruption of gender roles sometimes causes problems. Harpoââ¬â¢s insecurity about his masculinity leads to marital problems and his attempts to beat Sofia. Likewise, Shugââ¬â¢s confident sexuality and resistance to male domination cause her to be labeled a tramp. Throughout the novel, Walker wishes to emphasize that gender and sexuality are not as simple as we may believe. Her novel subverts and defies the traditional ways in which we understand women to be women and men to be men. Motifs Motifs are recurring structures, contrasts, or literary devices that can help to develop and inform the textââ¬â¢s major themes. Letters Walker uses the novelââ¬â¢s epistolary (letter-writing) form to emphasize the power of communication. Celie writes letters to God, and Nettie writes letters to Celie. Both sisters gain strength from their letter writing, but they are saved only when they receive responses to their letters. Therefore, although writing letters enables self-e-xpression and confession, it requires a willing audience. When Celie never responds to Nettieââ¬â¢s letters, Nettie feels lost because Celie is her only audience. Nettie grows disillusioned with her missionary work because the imperialists will not listen to her and because the Olinka villagers are stubborn. Only after Nettie returns home to Celie, an audience guaranteed to listen, does she feel fulfilled and freed. The Rural Farm Community Walker sets most of her novel in a rural farm community that has few visitors, and she focuses on colorful portraits of each of her characters. By focusing on the personal lives and transformations of her characters, Walker renders public events almost irrelevant. When Shug and Celie hear news of current events from the outside world, it all just sounds ââ¬Å"crazyâ⬠to them. The unspecific time and place broaden the novelââ¬â¢s scope, making its themes more universal. Colors Throughout the novel, the appearance of brighter colors indicates the liberation various characters experience. Walker uses color to signal renewals and rebirths at several points in the novel. When Kate takes Celie shopping for a new dress, the only color options are drab onesââ¬âbrown, maroon, and dark blue. Later, Celie and Sofia use bright yellow fabric from Shugââ¬â¢s dress to make a quilt. When Celie describes her religious awakening, she marvels how she never noticed the wonders that God has made, such as ââ¬Å"the color purple. â⬠Upon Mr. ______ââ¬â¢s transformation, he paints the entire interior of his house ââ¬Å"fresh and white,â⬠signaling his new beginning. Symbols Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. Sewing and Quilts In general, sewing in The Color Purple symbolizes the power women can gain from productively channeling their creative energy. After Sofia and Celie argue about the advice Celie has given Harpo, Sofia signals a truce by suggesting they make a quilt. The quilt, composed of diverse patterns sewn together, symbolizes diverse people coming together in unity. Like a patchwork quilt, the community of love that surrounds Celie at the end of the novel incorporates men and women who are bonded by family and friendship, and who have different gender roles, sexual orientations, and talents. Another important instance of sewing in the novel is Celieââ¬â¢s pants-sewing business. With Shugââ¬â¢s help, Celie overturns the idea that sewing is marginal and unimportant womenââ¬â¢s labor, and she turns it into a lucrative, empowering source of economic independence. God In the early parts of the novel, Celie sees God as her listener and helping hand, yet Celie does not have a clear understanding of who God is. She knows deep down that her image of God as a white patriarch ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t seem quite right,â⬠but she says itââ¬â¢s all she has. Shug invites Celie to imagine God as something radically different, as an ââ¬Å"itâ⬠that delights in creation and just wants human beings to love what it has created. Eventually, Celie stops thinking of God as she stops thinking of the other men in her lifeââ¬âshe ââ¬Å"git man off her eyeballâ⬠and tells God off, writing, ââ¬Å"You must be sleep. â⬠But after Celie has chased her patriarchal God away and come up with a new concept of God, she writes in her last letter, ââ¬Å"Dear God. Dear stars, dear trees, dear sky, dear peoples. Dear Everything. Dear God. This reimagining of God on her own terms symbolizes Celieââ¬â¢s move from an object of someone elseââ¬â¢s care to an independent woman. It also indicates that her voice is now sufficiently empowered to create her own narrative. Previous Section Analysis of Major Characters beginning. On the other hand, Tom only cares for himself, he is not considerate of others, and shows almost no love towards his family. **Quote** this quote shows the reader how different tom acts then Ralph, even when considering their age difference. * (peg 53 bottoms) it also shows that the mother wants Tom to understand the situation by explaining to him that daughters welfare is more important than even herself. The mother tries to convince Tom to believe that it is important to care for Laura. As soon as Ralph and the others were stranded on the island he was subjected to his responsibilities, some may say that these qualities could have been passed down through his father. This was evident when the first thing he thought was to create a system of order and prevent things from going into chaos. **Quote** the quote reconfirms the claim that Rallys father was a responsible Navy officer and throughout Rallys childhood, he may have influenced the shaping of Rallys character. 3 Examples of Erroneous Case Style
3 Examples of Erroneous Case Style 3 Examples of Erroneous Case Style 3 Examples of Erroneous Case Style By Mark Nichol In each of the following examples, a phrase employs incorrect treatment as to whether one or more words begin with uppercase or lowercase letters. An explanation, followed by a revision, points out each error. 1. Cutting physician salaries will not help solve the health care problem Essay
Cutting physician salaries will not help solve the health care problem - Essay Example The reason was to maintain outstanding individuals able in dealing with a critical issue. Medical field is extremely risky, and only requires potential students having competent brains who are willing to train in the tough environment. This was the reason Flexner report suggested the idea that is still used currently. After Flexner had finished doing his research and filing his report, many medical schools were graded as small trade schools that were not able to offer quality training in the medical field. The medical schools aimed at making profits hence did not offer compelling services to the patients visiting them. They did shoddy work to get more money for their personal and business needs. Some of the recommendations he suggested in his reports are as follows; for one to be admitted to medical college, he/she needed to possess a high school diploma, and experience of two or more years in university. Another recommendation was that the length of the college year should be about four years, and content to be taught should be agreed by CME. Proprietary medical learning institution should either be joined to other prominent universities or be entirely shut down. Flexner received many critics from other medical officers who were against his recommendations (Rayburn & Schulkin, 7). They believed it was unworkable and was a lousy way of solving the problems. Despite the negative reactions Flexner had to face, he stood for his report and promised to defend it from the critics. The effects of the Flexnerââ¬â¢s report had the following effects in America; a person aiming at being a physician, one needs to spend six to eight years in training, in a university setting (Ann & C harles, 236-245). The government values medical training and makes sure that students going through the training get superior training. According to statistics, the average physicians skills and capabilities have improved significantly compared to the past periods (Waitzkin, 39). The government

Analysis of Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen Essay -- Dulce Decoru
Analysis of "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen Based on the poem of "Dulce et Decorum Est", by Wilfred Owen. Owens war poetry is a passionate expression of outrage at the horrors of war and of pity for the young soldiers sacrificed in it. It is "Dulce et Decorum Est" which provides a very dramatic and memorable description of the psychological and physical horrors that war brings about. From the first stanza Owen uses strong metaphors and similes to convey a strong warning. The first line describes the troops as being "like old beggars under sacks". This not only says that the men are tired but that they are so tired they have been brought down to the level of beggars. "Coughing like hags" suggests that these young men (many who were in their teens) were suffering from ill health due to the damp, sludge and fumes from the decaying bodies of their fallen men at arms, lying on their chests. It was also in the winter's of The Great War where the events that, Owen speaks of took place, so they would have been prone to pneumonias and other diseases. By using the phrase "blood shod" Owen is describing how the troops have been on their feet for days and never resting. "Drunk with fatigue", echoes this view that the troops are wandering and stumbling around aimlessly with no sense of direction or of purpose. In the second stanza, the pace changes to one of urgency; Owen using the word "Gas" in swift repetition demonstrates this. By doing this Owen illustrates the urgency of a life and death situation, which requires the need to put on their gas masks. Owen describes a horrific scene unfolding in front of his very eyes, a scene of a man dying a horrible death because he was too slow to put on his ... ...one changes to one of questioning hopelessness and of quiet resignation with the onset of death. Owen demonstrates this by asking the reader to think, "Think how it wakes the seeds- Woke, once, the clays of a cold star". Here the reader can see that the suggestion of clay as being cold and lifeless and that when the sun tries to warm clay, it in fact bakes it hard. In lines 3, 4 and 5, "Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides, Full-nerved - warm-to hard too hard to stir? Was it for this the clay grew tall?" the reader can begin to ask the age old questions, "why?" and "Are we here for just this reason, too die for the sake of pointless wars that occur through mans own greed of power? Nonverbal Communication Essay
Nonverbal Communication is important as what people say. But much of nonverbal communication In different cultures is beyond our awareness. Lack of such Knowledge may arise misunderstanding and Conflicts. Every day, we respond to thousands on nonverbal cues and behaviors including postures, Facial expression, eye gaze, gestures, and tone of voice. From our handshakes to our hairstyles, Nonverbal details reveal who we are and impact how we relate to other people. Nonverbal communication is more important in understanding human behavior than words. Facial expression is responsible for a huge portion of nonverbal communication . Consider how much Information can be conveyed with a smile or a frown. While nonverbal communication and behavior can Vary between cultures, in my place of birth Freetown, Sierra Leone facial expression is a big deal; But Here in the United States is not. Which I think itââ¬â¢s ok. For example, waving the hand vertically with the Palm facing outward means ââ¬Å"Goodbyeâ⬠in the United States, but can be misinterpreted as meaning ââ¬Å"Come hereâ⬠to someone from a Mendes tribe in Sierra Leone Body, posture, and movement can also convey a great deal on information. Body language has grown Significantly since. But popular media has focus on the over interpretation of defensive postures, Arm crossing, and leg crossing. Some people will say crossing your arms, means you are not welcoming Them and for some is just a posture. Most of the time when I watch an interview, the host and the Guest crossing their legs. Our choice of color clothing, hairstyles and other factors affecting Appearance are also considered a means of nonverbal Communication. Appearances can also Alter physiological reactions, Judgment and interpretations. Just think of all the subtle Judgments you quickly make about someone based on his or her appearance. I had my Grandmother say this a thousand times that ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢the way people see you, tells them who you areâ⬠For nonverbal communication to be effective, one has to avoid stress, be aware of their emotions as Well as those of others and must pay attention in order to receive an accurate and consistent message That is free of any abusive language In order to correctly interpret another cultureââ¬â¢s style of communication, it is necessary to study The ââ¬Å"Silent languageâ⬠of one culture.

Biography of Leo Tolstoy, Russian Writer
Leo Tolstoy (September 9, 1828-November 20, 1910) was a Russian writer, best known for his epic novels. Born into an aristocratic Russian family, Tolstoy wrote realist fiction and semi-autobiographical novels before shifting into more moral and spiritual works. How is this revolution to take place? Nobody knows how it will take place in humanity, but every man feels it clearly in himself. And yet in our world every body thinks of changing humanity, and nobody thinks of changing himself. Early Life Tolstoy was born into a very old Russian aristocratic family whose lineage was, quite literally, the stuff of Russian legend. According to family history, they could trace their family tree back to a legendary nobleman named Indris, who had left the Mediterranean region and arrived in Chernigov, Ukraine, in 1353 with his two sons and an entourage of approximately 3,000 people. His descendant then was nicknamed ââ¬Å"Tolstiy,â⬠meaning ââ¬Å"fat,â⬠by Vasily II of Moscow, which inspired the family name. Other historians trace the familyââ¬â¢s origins to 14th or 16th-century Lithuania, with a founder named Pyotr Tolstoy. He was born on the familyââ¬â¢s estate, the fourth of five children born to Count Nikolai Ilyich Tolstoy and his wife, the Countess Maria Tolstoya. Because of the conventions of Russian noble titles, Tolstoy also bore the title of ââ¬Å"countâ⬠despite not being his fatherââ¬â¢s eldest son. His mother died when he was 2 years old, and his father when he was 9, so he and his siblings were largely brought up by other relatives. In 1844, at age 16, he began studying law and languages at Kazan University, but was apparently a very poor student and soon left to return to a life of leisure. Tolstoy did not marry until his thirties, after the death of one of his brothers hit him hard. On September 23, 1862, he married Sophia Andreevna Behrs (known as Sonya), who was only 18 at the time (16 years younger than him) and was the daughter of a doctor at court. Between 1863 and 1888, the couple had 13 children; eight survived to adulthood. The marriage was, reportedly, happy and passionate in the early days, despite Sonyaââ¬â¢s discomfort with her husbandââ¬â¢s wild past, but as time went on, their relationship deteriorated into deep unhappiness. Leo and Sonya Tolstoy, circa 1906. à Hulton-Deutsch Collection / Getty Images Travels and Military Experience Tolstoyââ¬â¢s journey from dissolute aristocrat to socially agitating writer was shaped heavily by a few experiences in his youth; namely, his military service and his travels in Europe. In 1851, after running up significant debts from gambling, he went with his brother to join the army. During the Crimean War, from 1853 to 1856, Tolstoy was an artillery officer and served in Sevastopol during the famous 11-month siege of the city between 1854 and 1855. Although he was commended for his bravery and promoted to lieutenant, Tolstoy did not like his military service. The gruesome violence and heavy death toll in the war horrified him, and he left the army as soon as possible after the war ended. Along with some of his compatriots, he embarked on tours of Europe: one in 1857, and one from 1860 to 1861. Tolstoy served as an officer during the Crimean War. Bettmann / Getty Imagesà During his 1857 tour, Tolstoy was in Paris when he witnessed a public execution. The traumatic memory of that experience shifted something in him permanently, and he developed a deep loathing and mistrust of government in general. He came to believe that there was no such thing as good government, only an apparatus to exploit and corrupt its citizens, and he became a vocal advocate of non-violence. In fact, he corresponded with Mahatma Gandhi about the practical and theoretical applications of non-violence. A later visit to Paris, in 1860 and 1861, produced further effects in Tolstoy which would come to fruition in some of his most famous works. Soon after reading Victor Hugoââ¬â¢s epic novel Les Miserables, Tolstoy met Hugo himself. His War and Peace was heavily influenced by Hugo, particularly in its treatment of war and military scenes. Similarly, his visit to the exiled anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon gave Tolstoy the idea for his novelââ¬â¢s title and shaped his views on education. In 1862, he put those ideals to work, founding 13 schools for Russian peasant children in the aftermath of Alexander IIââ¬â¢s emancipation of the serfs. His schools were among the first to run on the ideals of democratic educationââ¬âeducation which advocates democratic ideals and runs according to themââ¬âbut were short-lived due to the enmity of the royalist secret police. Early and Epic Novels (1852-1877) Childhoodà (1852)Boyhoodà (1854)Youthà (1856)Sevastopol Sketches (1855ââ¬â1856)The Cossacksà (1863)War and Peaceà (1869)Anna Kareninaà (1877) Between 1852 and 1856, Tolstoy focused on a trio of autobiographical novels: Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth. Later in his career, Tolstoy criticized these novels as being overly sentimental and unsophisticated, but theyââ¬â¢re quite insightful about his own early life. The novels are not direct autobiographies, but instead tell the story of a rich manââ¬â¢s son who grows up and slowly realizes that there is an insurmountable gap between him and the peasants who live on the land owned by his father. He also wrote a trio of semi-autobiographical short stories, Sevastopol Sketches, which depicted his time as an army officer during the Crimean War. For the most part, Tolstoy wrote in the realist style, attempting to accurately (and with detail) convey the lives of the Russians he knew and observed. His 1863 novella, The Cossacks, provided a close look at the Cossack people in a story about a Russian aristocrat who falls in love with a Cossack girl. Tolstoyââ¬â¢s magnum opus was 1869ââ¬â¢s War and Peace, a massive and sprawling narrative encompassing nearly 600 characters (including several historical figures and several characters strongly based on real people Tolstoy knew). The epic story deals with Tolstoyââ¬â¢s theories about history, spanning many years and moving through wars, family complications, romantic intrigues, and court life, and ultimately intended as an exploration of the eventual causes of the 1825 Decembrist revolt. Interestingly, Tolstoy did not consider War and Peace to be his first ââ¬Å"realâ⬠novel; he considered it a prose epic, not a true novel. Illustration of Natashas first ball in War and Peace from a 1893 edition. à Leonid Pasternak / Wikimedia Commons Tolstoy believed his first true novel to be Anna Karenina, published in 1877. The novel follows two major plotlines which intersect: an unhappily married aristocratic womanââ¬â¢s doomed affair with a cavalry officer, and a wealthy landowner who has a philosophical awakening and wants to improve the peasantryââ¬â¢s way of life. It covers personal themes of morality and betrayal, as well as larger social questions of the changing social order, contrasts between city and rural life, and class divisions. Stylistically, it lies at the juncture of realism and modernism. He actually criticized his own earlier works, including War and Peace and Anna Karenina, as not being properly realistic. Instead, he began developing a radical, anarcho-pacifist, Christian worldview that explicitly rejected both violence and the rule of the state. Between 1871 and 1874, Tolstoy tried his hand at poetry, branching out from his usual prose writings. He wrote poems about his military service, compiling them with some fairy tales in his Russian Book for Reading, a four-volume publication of shorter works that was intended for an audience of schoolchildren. Ultimately, he disliked and dismissed poetry. Two more books during this period, the novel The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886) and the non-fiction text What Is to Be Done? (1886), continued developing Tolstoyââ¬â¢s radical and religious views, with harsh critiques of the state of Russian society. His Confession (1880) and What I Believe (1884) declared his Christian beliefs, his support of pacifism and complete non-violence, and his choice of voluntary poverty and asceticism. He developed a firm belief that the best way to live was to strive for personal perfection by following the commandment to love God and love oneââ¬â¢s neighbor, rather than following the rules set by any church or government on earth. His thoughts eventually garnered a following, the Tolstoyans, who were a Christian anarchist group devoted to living out and spreading Tolstoyââ¬â¢s teachings. By 1901, Tolstoyââ¬â¢s radical views led to his excommunication from the Russian Orthodox Church, but he was unperturbed. In 1899, he had written Resurrection, his final novel, which critiqued the human-run church and state and attempted to expose their hypocrisy. His criticism extended to many of the foundations of society at the time, including private property and marriage. He hoped to continue spreading his teachings throughout Russia. Tolstoy at his desk, circa 1908. Library of Congress / Getty Images For the last two decades of his life, Tolstoy largely focused on essay writing. He continued advocating for his anarchist beliefs while also cautioning against the violent revolution espoused by many anarchists. One of his books, The Kingdom of God Is Within You, was one of the formative influences on Mahatma Gandhiââ¬â¢s theory of nonviolent protest, and the two men actually corresponded for a year, between 1909 and 1910. Tolstoy also wrote significantly in favor of the economic theory of Georgism, which posited that individuals should own the value they produce, but society should share in the value derived from the land itself. Literary Styles and Themes In his earlier works, Tolstoy was largely concerned with depicting what he saw around him in the world, particularly at the intersection of the public and private spheres. War and Peace and Anna Karenina, for instance, both told epic stories with serious philosophical underpinnings. War and Peace spent significant time criticizing the telling of history, arguing that itââ¬â¢s the smaller events that make history, not the huge events and famous heroes. Anna Karenina, meanwhile, centers on personal themes such as betrayal, love, lust and jealousy, as well as turning a close eye on the structures of Russian society, both in the upper echelons of the aristocracy and among the peasantry. Later in life, Tolstoyââ¬â¢s writings took a turn into the explicitly religious, moral, and political. He wrote at length about his theories of pacifism and anarchism, which tied into his highly individualistic interpretation of Christianity as well. Tolstoyââ¬â¢s texts from his later eras were no longer novels with intellectual themes, but straightforward essays, treatises, and other non-fiction work. Asceticism and the work of inner perfection were among the things Tolstoy advocated for in his writings. Portrait of Tolstoy later in life. Photos.com / Getty Imagesà Tolstoy did, however, get politically involved, or at least publicly expressed his opinions on major issues and conflicts of the day. He wrote in support of the Boxer rebels during the Boxer Rebellion in China, condemning the violence of the Russian, American, German, and Japanese troops. He wrote on revolution, but he considered it an internal battle to be fought within individual souls, rather than a violent overthrow of the state. Over the course of his life, Tolstoy wrote in a wide variety of styles. His most famous novels contained sweeping prose somewhere between the realist and modernist styles, as well as a particular style of seamlessly sweeping from quasi-cinematic, detailed but massive descriptions to the specifics of charactersââ¬â¢ perspectives. Later, as he shifted away from fiction into non-fiction, his language became more overtly moral and philosophical. Death By the end of his life, Tolstoy had reached a breaking point with his beliefs, his family, and his health. He finally decided to separate from his wife Sonya, who vehemently opposed many of the ideas and was intensely jealous of the attention he gave his followers over her. In order to escape with the least amount of conflict, he slipped away secretively, leaving home in the middle of the night during the cold winter. His health had been declining, and he had renounced the luxuries of his aristocratic lifestyle. After spending a day traveling by train, his destination somewhere in the south, he collapsed due to pneumonia at the Astapovo railway station. Despite the summoning of his personal doctors, he died that day, on November 20, 1910. When his funeral procession went through the streets, police tried to limit access, but they were unable to stop thousands of peasants from lining the streetsââ¬âalthough some were there not because of devotion to Tolstoy, but merely out of curiosity about a nobleman who had died. Legacy In many ways, Tolstoyââ¬â¢s legacy cannot be overstated. His moral and philosophical writings inspired Gandhi, which means that Tolstoyââ¬â¢s influence can be felt in contemporary movements of non-violent resistance. War and Peace is a staple on countless lists of the best novels ever written, and it has remained highly praised by the literary establishment since its publication. Tolstoyââ¬â¢s personal life, with its origins in the aristocracy and his eventual renunciation of his privileged existence, continues to fascinate readers and biographer, and the man himself is as famous as his works. Some of his descendants left Russia in the early 20th century, and many of them continue to make names for themselves in their chosen professions to this day. Tolstoy left behind a literary legacy of epic prose, carefully drawn characters, and a fiercely felt moral philosophy, making him an unusually colorful and influential author across the years. Superstitions in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by...
Superstition In Huckleberry Finn multiple instances of superstitions arise and seem to be engraved in the culture, even the most utmost examples being rarely questioned and continually passed on from generation to generation like a hand-me-down. In modern society, superstition is one big mind game. Eventually, enough people are affected by these notions that they become evidence for others. In both modern day and in the late 1800s when the story of Huck Finn took place, superstition has been used as a cloak to explain events or occurrences that humans cannot or simply choose not to explain in a logical manner, oftentimes showing the illogical thinking and gullibility of a certain society. In the story, Jim is a runaway slave. Because many unfair things happen to slaves, superstition plays a more prevalent role in Jimââ¬â¢s life. Jim uses superstitions to justify unfortunate events that happen to him, just accepting what had happened rather than investigating. In Chapter 10, Huck handles a snakeskin and Jim warns Huck that it would cause them bad luck. Later on, Huck finds another rattlesnake. Once Huck had killed the snake, he put it in the bottom of Jimââ¬â¢s blanket, searching for a good laugh when Jim found it. It eventually attracted another snake that bit Jim when he crawled in. Huck never told Jim that he put the dead snake in his blanket. Jim then scolded Huck about handling the snake skin earlier ââ¬Å"Jim said he reckoned I would believe him next time. Gender Discrimination in the Workplace Free Essays
Discrimination Against Women in the Workplace Unfair treatment of women has been prevalent throughout time. Although there have been many movements to attempt to terminate this tendency, it is still ubiquitous in todayââ¬â¢s society. Sex discrimination in the workplace occurs when women are treated differently because of their gender. We will write a custom essay sample on Gender Discrimination in the Workplace or any similar topic only for you Order Now Many factors influence employers and coworkers to display prejudice against women. Gender bias in the workplace is an unfair practice that results in lower payment, disrespect, and an overall bad occupation experience for victims. Gender discrimination is not necessarily a new issue, but it remains to be a major struggle despite the attempts that have been made to stop it through legal manners. In a report by The Institute for Womenââ¬â¢s Policy Researchââ¬â¢s Ariane Hegewisch, Cynthia Deitch, and Evelyn Murphy, the results of these attempts are summarized on both simple and complex levels. ââ¬Å"The 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibits employers from discriminating in their employment practices on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Although Title VII banned employment discrimination, it did not require specific actions to achieve this objective. â⬠Because the Act lacks such a critical detail, employers are able to avoid obeying it very easily. Laws besides the Civil Rights Act have been put into place in order to reduce unjust treatment in the workplace. For example, in 1963 the Equal Pay Act was passed. This act was supposed to end ââ¬Å"the practice of paying men more than women when performing the same jobs and duties. Despite these protections, many women still feel gender biased discrimination is a problemâ⬠(Gluck). The effects of both the Equal Pay Act and the Civil Rights Act have obviously been minimal, seeing as women are still very much looked down upon in the workplace. One of the most direct effects of sex discrimination in the workplace is the stereotyping that occurs. The mass overrepresentation of men in ââ¬Å"senior management positionsâ⬠is a sub-result of discrimination (ââ¬Å"Sex Discrimination and Sexual Harassmentâ⬠). The favoring of the selection of men over women for promotions has had a dramatic effect in the workplace over time. ââ¬Å"Stereotypical views regarding gender can cause supervisors to engage in the llegal practice of passing a person over for promotion due to gender. Supervisors most often pass over women due to preconceived notions about their roles and abilitiesâ⬠(Gluck). Stereotypes about women come not only from their under representation in the workplace, but from preconceived notions about their family roles. Even If a woman is hired withou t being asked about her family responsibilities, once she takes the position, her boss can ââ¬Å"view her employee file to see that she has young childrenâ⬠and then will be able to ââ¬Å"give her less responsibility or assign menial tasks to her that do not fit her job description. Although illegal, this practice still exists in offices todayâ⬠(Gluck). Once again, employers ignore the laws put in place to stop discrimination because of stereotyping. The only way gender bias will disappear is if stereotypes disappear as well. One of the reasons sexual discrimination is so prevalent today is that sexual harassment has become so accepted in society and in places of employment. ââ¬Å"Women have long been exposed to workplace harassment which involves conduct of a sexual nature or is premised on the sex of the victimâ⬠(McCann). Because of the wide range of behaviors that are considered sexual harassment, it is difficult to identify some action as harassment, which means rules against it are easy to ignore. Sexual harassment has terrible effects on the morale of victims. A loss of motivation ââ¬Å"necessary to perform their jobs effectivelyâ⬠is one of the most notable results of bias (Gluck). ââ¬Å"Offensive jokes of a suggestive or sexual nature and jokes implying that an employeeââ¬â¢s work is sub-par due to her genderâ⬠are one of the major causes for the loss of motivation that victims experience. Sexual discrimination is obviously an extremely negative practice, but one of the most devastating effects of the prejudice is the payment gap between men and women. According to the Institute for Womenââ¬â¢s Policy Research (IWPR), ââ¬Å"in 2011, female full-time workers made only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 23 percentâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Pay Equity Discriminationâ⬠). IWPR predicts that ââ¬Å"if change continues at the same slow pace as it has done for the past fifty years, it will take almost another fiftyââ¬âor until 2056ââ¬âfor women to finally reach pay parity. Such inequality in payment is absurd, especially since ââ¬Å"women compromise 47% of the total U. S. labor forceâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Womenââ¬â¢s Bureauâ⬠). Throughout history, women have battled gender discrimination inside and outside of the office. The difference in payment of men and women is a significant problem that needs to be paid more attention to. Once stereoty pes are dissolved, problems with gender bias will dissolve as well and the payment gap will become easier to close. Until then, the laws that have been imposed need to become enforced more strictly and individuals need to pay more attention to sexual harassment norms. Women deserve every right that men have and vice versa. Sexual discrimination affects all of society in some way or another, so it is important that societyââ¬â¢s members work towards ending it. ADD / ADHD free essay sample
ADHD by definition is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This is quite common psychiatric disease across the world. According to available literature an approximated 5 percent of children over the globe are victims of ADHD. In addition, the article claims that at least 30 percent of those diagnosed with this disorder still experience it at their adulthood. Further, the disorder is identified about two to four times in boy than is in girls (Council for Exceptional Children, 2010). However, these discrepancies have been blamed from bias refereeing by teachers. This paper is written as a discussion of ADHD. The author will in particular look at the symptoms, causes, and treatments of this psychiatric disorder. The actual cause of ADHD is not known. Nevertheless, numerous risk factors have been associated with the disorder. First, ADHD can be caused by genetic factors (Council for Exceptional Children, 2010). Available information show that an estimated over 70 percent of all ADHD cases are due to genetics factors. We will write a custom essay sample on ADD / ADHD or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Research findings have it that ADHD is mainly caused by a combination of genes. Such include à ±2A adrenergic receptor, dopamine transporter, dopamine receptors D2/D3, dopamine beta-hydroxylase monoamine oxidase A, catecholamine-methyl transferase, serotonin transporter promoter (SLC6A4), 5HT2A receptor, 5HT1B receptor, the 10-repeat allele of the DAT1 gene, the 7-repeat allele of the DRD4 gene, and the dopamine beta hydroxylase gene (DBH TaqI) (Council for Exceptional Children, 2010). It is however worthy noting that this disease does not follow the normal genetic disease analysis model. ADHD has also been claimed to be caused by adaptive behavior according to the evolutionary theory as proposed by Thom Hartmann. As per the theory, victims of this disorder are more equipped to seek than to stay put overtime. Another cause of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is non-shared environmental factors such as alcoholism and tobacco smoking (Council for Exceptional Children, 2010). This factor still encompasses social relation issues with the young members of the community. In addition, diet has also been closely associated with ADHD. According to research findings by the Southampton University in the United Kingdom, there is a potential link between ADHD and the use of artificial food colors among kids. Victims of ADHD are marked with numerous symptoms. True from available statistics, these victims have inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness as their main identifying characteristics (Council for Exceptional Children, 2010). Among the young, this type of disorder is portrayed by the ease to be distracted and failure to focus on one thing. Moreover, ADHD victims are prone to hyper-reaction to normal happenings in life. Such are indeed are direct result to their failure in accomplishing their academic endeavors. Further, ADHD can be witnessed in children who have much daydreaming, moving slowly and are easily confused in life. Management of ADHD has proved to be the most cost effective medical practice. Nevertheless, numerous research findings have shown that the condition can be reliably controlled by the use of stimulant medication. It is worth noting that amphetamine methylphenidate (Ritalin, Metadate, Concerta), dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), mixed amphetamine salts (Adderall), dextromethamphetamine (Desoxyn) and lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse) are the most commonly used types of stimulants in controlling ADHD (Council for Exceptional Children, 2010). However, it is advisable for medical practitioners to take into consideration the addictive nature of medications aimed at increasing the level of neurotransmitters such as dopamine. This is due to the fact that such medications are quite addictive, a factor that creates more problems to the victim (Council for Exceptional Children, 2010). Therefore, ADHD can be effectively managed to allow the victim lead a sustainable life. This is nevertheless more reliable when the condition is diagnosed at early stages of life.

Flannery Oconnor And The South Essays - Good Country People
Flannery O'connor And The South A Good Man Is Hard To Find and Good Country People are two short stories written by Flannery OConnor during her short lived writing career. Despite the literary achievements of OConnors works, she is often criticized for the grotesqueness of her characters and endings of her short stories and novels. Her writings have been described as understated, orderly, unexperimental fiction, with a Southern backdrop and a Roman Catholic vision, in defiance, it would seem, of those restless innovators who preceded her and who came into prominence after her death(Friedman 4). A Good Man Is Hard To Find and Good Country People are both set in the South, and OConnor explores the tension between the old and new South. The stories are tow ironically twisted tales of different families whos lives are altered after trusting a stranger, only to be mislead. Each story explores the themes of Christian theology, new verses the old South, and fallen human nature. In A Good Man Is Hard To Find, OConnor introduces the reader to a family representative of the old and new Southern culture. The grandmother represents the old South by the way in which she focuses on her appearnace, manners, and gentile ladylike behavior. OConnor writes her collars and cuffs were organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet. In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady(OConnor 118). In this short story, the wild diproportion of the terms, the vapid composure that summons up the ultimate violence only to treat it as a rare social opportuinty, and the cool irony with which OConnor presents the sentence makes it both fearful and ludicrous(Asals 132). The irony that OConnor uses points out the appalling characteristics of the grandmothers self-deception that her clothes make her a lady and turns it into a comic matter. Flannery OConnor goes to grea t length to give the reader insight into the characters by describing their clothes and attitudes. The fact that the grandmother took so much time in preparing herself for the trip exemplifies the old Southern tradition of self-presentation and self-pride. The grandmother takes pride in the way she presents herself because she wants everyone to know that she is a lady. Baileys, the grandsons, family represents that of the new Southern culture that is more open to change, but they are not totally receptive to change. OConnor describes the childrens mother in contrast to the grandmother by what they are wearing; thus their clothes represent the age from which they are. The Childrens mother still had on slacks and still had her head tied up in a green kerchief, but the grandmother had on navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white dot in the print(OConnor 118). The childrens mother is representative of the New South in which the Southern Lady is becoming less of a central figure within society. A lady of the old south would never wear slacks and tie her hair up in a kerchief to go out in public. Under an old south mentality these actions would be considered very unlady like. OConnor illustrates the tension between the old and the new south by the constant struggle between the grandmother, her son, and the daughter-in-law. OConnor also poses the contrast between the old and new South in her short story Good Country People. Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman represent the old South because of the way in which they carry themselves and their traditional beliefs and values. Mrs. Freeman works for Mrs. Hopewell who states the reason for her keepin her so long was that they were not trash. They were good country people(OConnor 272). Mrs. Hopewell describes Mrs. Freeman and her two daughters as two of the finest girls she knew and Mrs. Freeman was a lady and that she was never ashamed to take her anywhere or introduce her to anybody they might mett(OConnor 272). In contrast to Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Hopewell, Joy/Hulga represents the new south that is not concerned with self presentation in the way that the grandmother is in A

Polonius is an interesting Essays
Polonius is an interesting Essays Polonius is an interesting Paper Polonius is an interesting Paper Essay Topic: Interesting The characters play important roles in Shakespeares Hamlet. Each character is unique in his of her contribution to the entire play. Without certain characters, the play would not have the same effect. Polonius is an interesting and complicated character who plays an important part in Hamlet. Although he is not one of the main characters, Polonius serves as the nosy chief counselor to King Claudius. Poloniuss destructive personality and meddling behavior leads to his fatal end. Poloniuss first extended speaking scene is in Act I, Scene 3. In this scene, Laertes is speaking to his sister Ophelia about Hamlets attention towards her. He warns her to protect her virtues. Polonius arrives and reminds his son that he should be on his way to Paris. Right after Laertes leaves, Polonius turns to his daughter and asks her what they were discussing before he entered the room. Although it may be common for a father to be concern with his daughters life, Polonius did not act concerned- just ignorant and criticizing. The lack of Poloniuss concern can be read in his responses to Ophelia. Right after she reveals that they were talking about Hamlet, Polonius criticized her. When Ophelia explains to her father that Laertes was concerned about Hamlets late made many tenders (1. 3. 108), Polonius just scoffs at the idea of Hamlet being attentive towards her. His words are blunt and unkind. He calls Ophelia a woodcock (1. 3. 124), which is a gullible bird. Polonius does not consider his daughters feelings for Hamlet. He continues to warn her to conduct herself well so she does not make him appear a fool. He forbids her from seeing Hamlet for the wrong, selfish reasons. In this scene, Poloniuss character displays a selfish nature where he only cares about his image. His rudeness to his daughter shows that he does not care about her. Instead, he is suspicious that she might ruin his reputation and that Hamlet has the worst intentions for Ophelia. Polonius is selfish, suspicious, and uncaring. The suspicious trait later plays a part in Claudiuss death when he is trying to find out the reason behind Hamlets insanity. Polonius is meddling in his sons life in Act II, Scene 1. Before Laertes departs to Paris, Polonius gave him some last words of advice. Polonius reminds him thou canst not be false to any man (1. 3. 83) and to thine own self be true (1.3. 84). Polonius is asking his son to be honorable and virtuous. Polonius is hypocritical for giving his son this advice because he is not trusting of his own son. After his son leaves, he sends Reynaldo to follow Laertes to Paris to find out how he is conducting himself. Polonius does not trust his son and does the dishonorable thing of sending a spy. Why would Polonius give Laertes fatherly advice and still not trust his son? This shows another weakness of Polonius. He cannot learn to trust others. He is a hypocrite for asking his son to be honorable when he cannot listen to his own advice. Polonius is proven not to be an honorable man and this ironically is how he was killed. Polonius did the unthinkable act of spying and eavesdropping on a private conversation and is killed. If Polonius had listen to his own advice to his son, Polonius would have never mettle in Hamlets life and continually spy on him. Poloniuss job is to be King Claudiuss chief counselor. Part of the job description is to help Claudius sort out information and make wise decisions. But there are moments when it seems as though Polonius wants to make the final word, as oppose to letting Claudius make the final decision. This shows that Polonius likes to meddle in other peoples business, including his own kings life. Polonius does not let other people live their lives without his words. Being nosy is the reason why Polonius got involved with Hamlets sanity issue and leads Polonius to his death later in the play. In Act II, Scene 2, Polonius suggests a reason for Hamlets sudden lunacy. He believes the reason is that Ophelia refuses to see Hamlet and that alone has driven Hamlet into madness. Polonius devises a plan where he will let Ophelia talk to Hamlet. During their encounter, Polonius and Claudius will observe the situation from a hidden area. From this encounter, Polonius ensures Claudius that they will find the true reason for Hamlets madness. Poloniuss insensitivity towards Ophelias situation is shown when he uses her for his personal plans. He does not take her feelings into consideration and uses her as a prop to impress Claudius. But Poloniuss plan did not please Claudius. After watching the couple interacts, Claudius is now convinced that love is not the cause of Hamlets craziness. Dissatisfied that the King did not agree with his theory, Polonius urges one last attempt to find out Hamlets secret. Polonius is desperate to convince the King that his theory is right. Polonius wants to please Claudius, but he also does not want to be wrong. As a counselor, he should be obedient to the King. Instead, he tries to control Claudius by ignoring Claudiuss theory and convinces him to give one last attempt to find the whole truth. Little did he know his last meddling in Hamlets life would be a fatal one. Poloniuss life ends tragically. While hiding behind the arras and eavesdropping on Hamlet and Queen Gertrude, Polonius is convinced the truth would be revealed. Polonius is meddling in Hamlets life by getting involved in a situation that has nothing to do with him. During Hamlets and Gertrudes conversation, she is frightened by Hamlet which prompts Polonius to echo a cry out for help. Thinking Polonius was the king, Hamlet thrusts his rapier into the arras and kills him, whom Hamlet describes as a fool (3. 4. 38). Even Hamlet recognizes that Poloniuss death is avoidable if only he had stayed out of everyones personal business. Poloniuss sudden death is caused by his nosy, meddling ways. He is out to seek the truth about Hamlet and, ironically, is killed by Hamlet. If Polonius stopped meddling in Hamlets life in Act II, Scene 1, he would still be alive to be by the Kings side. Instead, he forces his way into finding secrets that do not involves him and ends up dead. Poloniuss destructive and prying personality is what kills him. Polonius plays an important role in Shakespeares play Hamlet. He meddles in other characters lives. He also sticks his nose into others situations. He is a selfish, suspicious, dishonorable, and nosy. These qualities are destructive and that is why his life ended so tragically. Poloniuss early death foreshadows the other characters deaths later in the play.
